Chapter 28

Every time she came back here, it felt more and more peculiar, like it was someone else’s house already and she was casually breaking and entering. The door creaked open and emptiness greeted her like a stranger’s handshake. Everything was just where she’d left it, of course, but it all felt different somehow, like someone else had put all this stuff in here and she was but a trespasser, snooping.

It was wrong to do so, but she couldn’t help comparing Richard’s house with this flat. Trying to weigh up where she’d be able to live without being troubled by thoughts of Eric Clements or Richard, and she discovered she wouldn’t be able to live in either place.

The only option left open to her, provided she discounted the silliest option of moving in permanently with her mum, was to sell Richard’s house and buy something that had no bad memories and no bad karma attached to it.

Yes, that’s what she’d do.

But for now, she went into the bedroom and pulled out the half-roll of wallpaper she kept there. No, she did not know why she’d kept it, except to make repairs if any of the lounge walls got damaged somehow. “I know how stupid that sounds,” she whispered to herself. From the kitchen she snatched a large marker pen and headed back into the lounge, unrolled the paper and wrote a message on it.

She let the sofa soak her up and envelop itself around her, looking at the dust across the top of the TV, and marvelling at all the goings-on that had happened since she last sat and watched some shit on the damned thing. “No idea why I pay my fucking licence,” she said, and reached into her pocket for the cigarettes. She lit one, and took off her coat, slung it over the back of the sofa and was shocked to hear the gun thud against it. She just sat in silence for a minute or two, letting her mind catch up with her thoughts, and letting her thoughts run wild for a minute.

Well, the reason she was here finally made her get off her arse and unroll the paper across the sofa pinning the ends in place with a couple of cushions to stop it rolling back up again. She dragged the sofa roughly into the centre of the room, and she stood back to admire her handiwork. Work she wouldn’t have to do if PSD kept their bastard noses out of business that was nothing to do with them. Of course, she conceded, PSD wouldn’t have been on the horizon at all if she’d only put the stash of drugs and money into the store in the first place.

“Be fucking dead now, though, wouldn’t I?”

It was a coin with three sides, and no matter how many times you tossed it not one of them would land in her favour.

The note on the wallpaper simply read: Please phone me on 07700922498. I need footage of the night I was attacked.
