Sunlight seeped through the narrow cabin windows. Niko hadnât slept, too concerned for Vasili asleep on the cot. His eye being blue was a damn good sign the flame had withdrawn its control, but theyâd only know for sure when he woke.
He looked weak enough to snap in two, but his breathing was steady. Through the night, Niko had checked his frail wrist, feeling for his heartbeat. It was there, fluttering against Nikoâs fingertips.
Niko watched the door too, half expecting Roksanaâs crew to bundle Vasili below deck with his brother.
Roksana arrived sometime after dawn. She studied the sleeping prince, under Nikoâs watchful glare, and then nodded for Niko to join her outside.
Niko emerged, shielding his eyes against the glaringly bright sun. All around lay endless ocean and sky. Heâd never left the land behind before. It was isolating. But freeing too. The flame couldnât reach them here.
âHere.â Roksana handed him a bread roll stuffed with fish meat. âEat.â
His stomach growled in reply. He took the roll and quickly devoured it in a few bites.
Roksana leaned a hip against the mast. âI suppose I should officially welcome you aboard Wallaâs Heart.â
âYasirâs ship.â
She waved his observation away. âHeâll be safe in the city, Iâm sure of that much. Lajani has more lives than a shiproach.â
Yasir would hopefully have gotten Liam to safety too. Niko would find them again, once heâd figured out what their next move was. But he wasnât thinking on any of that until Vasili woke and he knew what was left of the prince. His gaze tracked back toward the cabin door, thoughts drifting.
âHow is he?â Roksana asked.
âAlive. Any more than that, I canât say until he wakes.â
There was no knowing what was left of Vasiliâs mind. Whatever the elves had done to trigger this, it seemed unlikely heâd be the same Vasili that had teased him at the northward inn. If it was like the cabin in the woods again, he could perhaps manage it, depending on how long Roksana let them stay. Niko would prefer to ship Vasili and himself off to some faraway land where none of this could reach either of them, but as Vasili had told him many times, running away wouldnât solve anything.
âThere are fresh clothes and soap, for when heâs ready,â Roksana said. âYou can have the captainâs cabin as long as you need it. Iâm rather enjoying bunking with the crew. The swines play a mean game oâ jacks.â
âThank you. For all of it.â And he meant it. He couldnât have gotten Vasili back without her. Sheâd done everything sheâd said she would, and more.
âLetâs hope it helps.â
Niko untied the key to Amirâs lock and handed it over. âHeâll be as angry as a rat in a barrel by now.â
She slipped the key into her pocket. âOh, I know. He wasnât quiet about his treatment. Says he wants a cabin with a view. Iâm afraid weâre not used to accommodating spoiled prince-brats.â
Roksana appeared to have gotten the measure of Amir quickly enough.
