CHAPTER 10

Kevlar rolled to his side and brought his forearm over his eyes as he tried to catch his breath. He couldn’t remember ever coming so hard in his life. He knew he had to give Neve some answers, but in all honesty, he was a bit confused himself, but he couldn’t regret any part of it either.

“Kevlar, what’s going on. I feel all kinds of funny and what was that biting thing? I’ve never bitten anyone, let alone while…”

“Do not say the next words you’re about to say. I know we both have a past, but right now…hell never, is when I want to hear about yours.” Kevlar ground out.

Neve turned to Kevlar, “See, this is what I’m talking about. I feel pissed inside but I know I’m not angry at anyone.”

Sighing, Kevlar asked, “Did you parents never tell you about mates, Neve?”

Neve drew back in confusion, “Mates? You mean like they have for wolves in the wild?”

“It isn’t only wolves that have mates, Neve.” Kevlar corrected.

Nodding, Neve said, “I know. I mean my parents were killed when I was really little and my grandparents raised me. The problem is I’m an arctic fox and they were red tails like my mom. I don’t know much about my kind of shifter but I did do some research into the wild version of an arctic fox. I always thought it was romantic as fuck to know that my kind are monogamous when it comes to finding love, but what does that have to do with what I’m feeling now?”

Kevlar sighed and turned to Neve, “I’m not any more informed than you are. My parents were killed when I was just coming into puberty and my father hadn’t had ‘the talk’ with me yet. I’m only going on what others know and they were pretty adamant that we might be mates. I guess they were right.”

Neve was out of the bed and pulling on his clothes so fast it damn near made Kevlar’s head spin. Lifting up, Kevlar asked, “Where do you think you’re going?”

“Home.” Neve said in a deadpan voice.

Kevlar could feel the fear and angst running through his body and he knew it was coming from Neve, “Neve, stop. We need to talk about this.”

Shaking his head, Neve said, “No. No we don’t. I don’t know what’s going on here, but whatever it is, it can’t be that.”

Hurt stabbed at Kevlar and Neve lifted his finger and waved it his way. “Don’t. Do not come across as a wounded man.”

Kevlar tried to stave off the hurt, but the more knowledge that his mate was running from him…that he didn’t want him just…hurt and he couldn’t help how he was feeling.

“Oh come on Kevlar. You can’t…I mean you…” Neve dropped the shoe he held in his hand and plopped on the end of the bed, running his hands over his face. “You don’t want me. We both know that.”

“I think I proved to you just how much I want you, Neve, not more than fifteen minutes ago.
