Livability or quality-of-life workshop

A workshop can be convened which encourages participants to think holistically about:

All the factors that contribute to their enjoyment of living, working and playing in their local area, and those elements which distract

Ways that these resources and corrosives can be measured

Their perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of each

Which resources and corrosives they would like to see changed the most.

The workshop can be run with mixed interest groups, or can be run with separate special interest groups. The added advantage of separate groups is that each workshop session takes on a life and direction of its own and produces different results reflecting the makeup and experiences of the group. These unique insights can be useful in subsequent strategy formulation in making strategies more responsive to different needs within the community.

The starting point for this workshop can be a summary of liability resources and corrosives that have emerged during the previous mapping exercises. In the background or foreground of most contributions to the mapping exercises, there will be a livability resource or corrosive. These can be extracted and listed before the workshop. This list can be supplemented by the list in Appendix B.

The term livability resource will be even more foreign to most residents than culture. The workshop needs to start with some explanation of the concepts explained in this section. This also means that care needs to be taken in how the workshops are titled. References to lifestyle or quality of life are likely to be more meaningful than an invitation to ‘improve your livability resources and diminish your livability corrosives’.
