Chapter 34
Ahn stood at the bow of the patrol boat fingering his "Great Leader" badge. Below him, the clear water of the Yalu flowed cold and empty. His quarry had escaped him.
Far up the river, the old scow pulled into the dock at the lumberyard. Ahn would love to believe that Rosuto and the spies who had snatched her had all died, cut to pieces by the scow's engines, their body parts washed out to sea. But a cold rock in his gut told him otherwise. Somehow they'd survived their jump from the bridge and managed to swim unseen to the Chinese shore.
Ahn's boat heaved to in the middle of the river on the Korean side. His stomach tied into a knot. He hated boating. It wasn't so bad on a big ship like the Easterner, but the little patrol boat was too unstable for his liking.
He stared hard at the water, but found no sign of the spies. His people had reported two of them in Pyongyang, but there had been three during the attack on the detention center. The other had to be the Easterner's missing captain.
"Do you think they're dead, sir?" the naval officer that commanded the boat asked. His black uniform and oversized cap annoyed Ahn, along with the arrogant way he kept his balance on the saucy boat.
"No." Ahn signaled for them to take him back to shore. "That would be far too easy."
He gripped the side of the boat as it came up to the pier. The spies had escaped him and taken Rosuto with them. He'd have to get the Chinese a picture of Rosuto and convince them that she was a North Korean that must be repatriated and that the spies who had taken her were a menace and must be captured and handed over to Ahn for questioning.
Ahn stepped onto the slick wooden pier and held still for a moment until the ground stopped moving beneath him. "Who are they?" he grumbled to himself, staring back at the point on the bridge where the two spies, Rosuto, and the Easterner's captain had jumped into the river. "Who do they work for?"
"The Japanese, I'd guess," the young soldier whom he'd taken as his aide said. "They want the girl. That's why they abductedâ" His voice caught, showing proper grief and respect for their missing "Eternal Leader."
Ahn grimaced. He would never tell his aide, but the "Eternal Leader's" abduction was all part of Ahn's plan. The spies that had broken into the government building only added fuel to the fire he'd lit. But something had gone wrong after that.
The spies had taken the file, so they should have gone to Kaechon where Ahn's men would have arrested them. But somehow they'd skipped the trap at Kaechon and gone straight to Sinuiju. He couldn't fathom where they'd gotten that information. No one knew where Rosuto was. He'd taken every precaution, including giving Rosuto a different name when he had her transferred to Sinuiju. Not even the head of the detention center there knew her true identity.
