Chapter 16

Sadie

“Give me the ethereal disc,” Apollyn demanded.

At first, I was going to tell him no, but he stretched his hand across the table palm up, and said,”You know what the disc can do. Remind my sons, though.”

Altair had sprouted horns and I couldv’e sworn I heard Dominik’s wings ripping free. It seemed that their father demanding me to hand over the disk along with my tense reaction caused a ripple effect.

“It’s okay,” I breathed. “The ethereal disc can be used to unbind a spirit from a body.” I reached into my pocket and placed the disc in Apollyn’s hands.

Altair’s horns faded and Dominik’s leathery wings disappeared.

“Exactly, it can also break certain curses and enchantments,” Apollyn added.

He walked towards Loki, who was still in the crate, staring up at him with wide, frightened eyes. He opened the door and Loki stalked out. The cat looked as if it was seeing ghosts, but it made no moves to run away. Apollyn placed the disc on Loki’s head, and it immediately started to glow with a bright, white light as Apollyn’s voice boomed loudly with ancient incantations.

One heartbeat, the cat was there. The next heartbeat, a man stood in its place, free of the magic that had been holding him. His eyes glowed as he looked around.

Loki was a striking young male. His slim frame was draped in nothing but his own skin which was smooth like polished marble, revealing a divinely handsome form. His raven black hair was cropped close at chin-length, framing his perfect face. He possessed the eyes of his cat—piercing green eyes that were alive with intelligence, as if they could see deep into one’s soul. He stood proudly and unashamedly, baring himself to the world. Standing there, Loki examined himself, his eyes tracing the lines of his body, fingers running over his lean, slim physique.

We were struck dumb initially with shock, and then Altair and Dominik seethed with unease. I knew there would be trouble. Altair charged first, wrapping his fingers around Loki’s throat. Altair fumbled with his grip on the cat-turned-man, who wriggled out of his grasp and landed against the wall with a difficult thud, falling to the ground in a heap. Then, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and pressed himself against the wall, defensively raising his arms to protect himself from another attack.

“Who are you?” Dominik demanded, his voice echoing off the walls.

“M-My name is Loki,” Loki stammered, trembling in fear. “P-P-Please, don’t hurt m-me.”

Feeling pity for the creature I once cared for while he was a cat, I scrambled to the window seat, yanking a blanket off of it, and handed it to Loki, who wrapped it around his body.

“Please don’t hurt him,” I said.

“I...told you so,” Apollyn said, folding his arms over his chest and picking up a glass of something and taking a sip.

Altair, Dominik, and Morpheus quickly surrounded the young man.

“Father was right. He spied on Sadie.” Altair stumbled backward, his surprise so intense it caused him to forget his manners.
