Chapter 16

We find Jaxon pacing outside of the infirmary. He looks so worried with his brow furrowed and chewing on his thumbnail. When we approach, he grabs me by the arm and drags me down an empty hallway. Krista follows.

“What the hell happened?” he hisses at me.

“What do you mean?” I ask, though I don’t know why I’m playing innocent. I’m going to have to tell him the truth if I expect him to help us get the book from the hedge beasts.

“I thought we weren’t going to lie to each other anymore,” he says, dropping my arm as if touching me disgusts him.

“That was before you left us,” I say. “Before you decided that the lies were good enough for you, even though people have been dying for decades in this place.”

“What?” he asks. “What are you talking about?”

I glance at Krista, and she shrugs.

“Ivy was doing research here while Krista and I went to town to try and learn more,” I explain. “She discovered that dozens of students have gone missing at La Voisin over the years, all the way back to the school’s founding.”

“Dozens is a low estimate,” Krista says. “The school has been here a hundred and fifty years. If only one student a year went missing, that’s a hundred and fifty kids. But Ivy found evidence of as many as four students a year going missing in some cases.”

I nod, and Jaxon looks confused.

“That…that can’t be true,” he says. “How can so many people go missing and no one notice?”

“They were all orphans,” I say. “People with no one to fight for them.”

“Is that what Ivy was doing in Ms. Brewster’s office? Looking for information about the missing students?”

“No,” I say. “But it is related. Damon said that—”

“Damon?” Jaxon asks.

“The statue man,” I remind him. He nods. “Anyway, he said that if I help him, I would be able to help Zoey. It stands to reason then that we might be able to help more missing students as well. So, instead of looking for the missing students, we are trying to help Damon first.”

“And that means releasing him from his curse,” Krista adds. “For that, we need to find a grimoire with a spell that can do that.”

“What grimoire?” Jaxon asks.

“It’s called the Soule Grimoire,” I say. “I know you don’t believe in this, but I think it’s the official Grimoire for the missing coven.”

“You’re still chasing this missing coven?” Jaxon asks with an annoyed sigh. “That’s a dead end.”

I know he’s wrong, but there’s no sense arguing. “Maybe, but it’s the lead we’re following for now. And to find the grimoire, we need powerful blood magic.”

Jaxon throws his arms out at his sides, his eyes going wide. “You were stealing a book of blood magic from Ms. Brewster? Are you actually insane?”

“Probably,” I say.

“You’re like a damn starving dog with a bone,” Jaxon says. “Once you get your teeth into something, you never let go, no matter how stupid or dangerous.”

I just shrug. He’s not wrong.
