CHAPTER 27

Washington, D.C.

Jonathan Preston and General Miller sat in silence as General Renick read the cablegram from Fabio Martinez detailing the attack on the convoy in São Paulo and the injury to Kathleen Lauren. Preston was angry with himself for not expecting such a bold move from Tsukuda. He quickly realized that Tsukuda must have thought that the sword was being sold to another buyer and was part of the shipment that Martinez had put together.

“It’s my job to think ahead of these criminals, General. I should have expected an attack in São Paulo,” Jon stated.

“You’re wrong, Jon. It was Fabio Martinez’s job, and he managed it well. Fabio’s intelligence network discovered the plot, and he added extra military personnel at the last minute. When they attacked, those goons were hit hard. A dozen were killed, and only two that we know of got away,” Miller replied.

“Sugimoto’s men will be watching the airports and bases. When will the plane arrive?”

“Tomorrow at noon. As a precaution, I had the plane diverted to Langley Air Force Base. It landed before sunrise and was taxied into a secure hangar. The antiquities were repackaged into cardboard boxes. The cargo will be flown out on a Douglas C-54 Skymaster. It will arrive at Bolling Air Force Base tomorrow afternoon.”

“What about delivery to the university?”

“I’ve made arrangements for the antiquities to be transported to Georgetown University in six separate civilian panel vans over two days. The drivers have no idea what is in the containers, just that their contents are fragile. The cardboard cartons have logos that identify them coming from five different publishers. It will look like a normal delivery of university supplies and textbooks.”

“That was quick thinking.”

“Well, it was necessary. However, Professor Kirkendall and Wong can know nothing about what happened in São Paulo. Otherwise, they might appear doubtful and fearful. Or, at least Kirkendall might. Therefore, I do suggest that you arrange for additional security at the university. Make sure they are visible.”

“I’ll have Wong use his security guards. Sugimoto has already seen them at the jewelry store.”

“I was thinking something more covert.”

“Yes, I was thinking the flower beds around the Old North Building will be getting some attention starting today. That way, the ground crews will not look out of place when the meeting takes place.”
