How we choose to hold one another accountable in our partnerships will tell more about our values than anything else. We can model processes that foster dignity and mutuality. We can also form processes that build capacity and sustainability. We will examine this in the next chapter.

Building Capacity and Sustainability

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.

Many churches and mission agencies misunderstand the purpose of partnership. It is not just giving money or cutting a check. We need to go beyond that to the place where we help cross-cultural partners develop infrastructure and capacity so they are sustainable over the long haul. Each group we partner with should be stronger and better off than they were before we started working together.”[1] This advice came from Howie Brant, one of the mission leaders I respect most deeply. He has worked with all his heart to help Majority World partners fulfill their dreams and destinies in global missions. His comment needs to be heeded. If dependency can be a negative outcome from partnering cross-culturally, is it possible to partner and share resources in ways that truly do build capacity and foster sustainability? There are numerous incidents of this happening all around the world. The difference frequently lies in our ability to see potential and believe in others, and our ability to work alongside others with patience and grace.
