Two

Iris bounced off the rock-hard figure, and it took her a moment to realize it wasn’t a wall at all… but a man.

A tall, dark-haired man with broad shoulders and a chiseled jawline, standing over six feet tall.

Her breath hitched, and she didn’t even realize how close she was to toppling over until the man reached out and took hold of her arm to steady her.

The way his dimples carved in his cheeks when he smiled sent jitters in Iris’s heart. She knew she needed to stop gawking at him like he was the meal, and she tried to balance herself. But destiny wasn’t in favor of Iris as her ankle twisted in her strappy stilettos, and she tumbled forward—further into the handsome man’s arms.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry!” Iris bumbled, her face pressed into his hard chest, the blood rushing to her cheeks.

“No worries,” the man said, helping her over to a lobby chair while Effie and Ariella rushed to her side.

“Are you okay, Iris?” Effie asked, and Iris heard Jianna somewhere behind her calling for someone to bring ice and a medic.

“No, no! Please, I’m fine! Just your typical high-heel faux-pas!” Iris cried, turning in her seat to wave off Jianna.

“Mind if I have a look?” the handsome brick wall asked. “I’m a doctor.”

Iris’ face flushed further. “Um, sure, okay,” she mumbled as the man took her ankle in his hand.

“I’m going to take this shoe off, okay? It looks like it’s already starting to swell.”

She nodded her head to consent. Damn it, Iris thought. Barely on this vacation, and I’ve already messed it all up.

His hand on her ankle tickled, and not just in the physical sense. His touch sent shivers up her leg, and Iris was suddenly well aware of how many people had crowded around and were watching.

“This is humiliating,” she admitted, looking up at Effie for help.

She got the point. Effie—with Jianna’s help—shooed away the onlookers, handing Iris the ice pack that someone delivered and taking a few steps away to give them space.

“You should be fine,” the doctor said, resting her foot on his knee as he knelt in front of her. “You’ll want to keep it elevated and keep ice on it, and as long as you wear flats while dancing your vacation won’t be ruined.”

“Except for the absolute embarrassment,” Iris tried to laugh it off, but it didn’t help.

“Nothing a drink or two won’t help you to forget in no time.”

“Doctor’s prescription?”

He shook his head with a smile. “I’m Matthiew, by the way.”

“Iris,” she replied. “Sorry about all of this. I’m sure you came here for rest and relaxation, not to work.” She pulled her ankle off Matthiew’s knee and clumsily stood.

“Careful,” he said, rising with her, his arm offered out to help her though she didn’t take it.

“I’m good,” Iris assured, walking with a limp as one foot still wore a shoe, and the other didn’t. Right before she reached Effie and Ariella, Iris turned around, remembering she had forgotten something.
