Instead of walking in, I ring the doorbell. When Alexa opens the door, she looks at me weirdly. “Why did you ring the doorbell instead of putting in the code? I haven’t changed it. Are you still mad?” she asks.

“No, I’m not mad, Alexa, but we do need to talk,” I speak.

I hear the kids inside, so I signal her to come out and sit on the front porch with me. Alexa sits on the swinging bench, and usually I would sit with her. This was our spot. I take a deep breath and release another one. I hang back on the wood railing. I look over past her at everything. I used to love this place but lately, the only place I stare at in deep thought is the enchanted forest replica. Winter doesn't know this, but sometimes I go through it, and I can understand why she keeps running there. It is so peaceful; it makes you feel like you’re in a different world. Somewhere foreign and it’s worth it. It’s beautiful.

This place that I had before. I only got it because I wanted something for myself. A place to run away to when things got messy. I don’t like to be in crazy drama, so this was my quiet space. Sometimes, it involved Alexa, and other times, it didn’t. Willow never came here; instead, she had her own secret place downtown. I don’t know what happened to it. One day, she just simply told me she was letting it go.

“You’re stalling,” Alexa says as she crosses one leg over the other.

I nod. “I know, but I’m just reminiscing, thinking about Willow and if she would be happy with the way I’m handling things. You know?”

“What do you mean? Like how you’re kissing her sister like she’s actually your wife with the same lips that you kissed Willow?” Alexa says in an accusatory tone.

I sigh. “I can’t even deny that. I did kiss her.”

Alexa stands and looks away from me, but before she does, I can see the tears that have formed in her eyes. I want to comfort her, but I don’t think that’s the right thing to do in these circumstances. I stay back and Alexa looks at me after a moment. “You’re not here just to tell me that, are you?” she asks.

I shake my head. “No, that’s not it. I’m sorry, Alexa,” I say.

Oddly it does hurt me to let her go. She was someone that I felt was part of my life for more than five years. We were friends first. Willow, Alexa, and me It hadn’t started off as some relationship, but it developed, and it grew a couple of years after Alexa’s husband passed away. We shared things, but now that I think about it, it wasn’t the deep things. I don’t know how I hadn’t notice. There are times when Alexa would be talking to another man or trying to make me jealous, but it never worked. Yet with Winter, it flares up so bad, I think I’m capable of killing someone with my bare hands.
