Chapter 4

Most of the wedding guests had trickled out of the reception at the Legion Hall, having dropped off their gifts and making a hasty trip through the buffet line. The remainder of the guests were table-hopping and catching up with family they hadn’t seen for a while, and over half the wedding party was tanked off their ass and dancing to eighty’s songs.

But not Katie. As always, she wasn’t quite relegated to any group. Instead of leaving or engaging, she quietly sipped champagne at a table near the back door and watched the festivities from a safe distance. She’d found the spot early in the afternoon and stuck to it, while most everyone else her age danced and celebrated on the large dance floor. She loved her big family, but she loved them from a distance more often than not.

She tugged up the bodice of her navy-blue strapless gown—something she’d been doing about every two minutes since she’d slipped into it. She detested strapless gowns. The only salvageable part of the ensemble were the cowboy boots they’d bought to go with the bridesmaid’s dresses.

She glanced at her watch, wondering how early was too early to leave. It was only eight in the evening. Though sunset was still an hour or so away, the hall was quickly growing dim, since the windows were tiny and close to the ceiling. The bridesmaids had already kicked off their cowboy boots, and the groomsmen were on their fifth or sixth round of shots. Leaving this early wasn’t an option. She’d give it another half hour and then she’d wish the bride and groom a happy marriage and slip out.

She lifted the plastic champagne flute to her lips, her gaze traveling across the large room to land on Logan once again. She couldn’t seem to help herself. He wore his Marine Corps Dress Blue uniform, which only made an intimidating man even more so.

He seemed larger than life, this looming figure who stood well over six feet tall. Unbreakable. She, on the other hand, was very breakable, and she was starting to fear she was falling for him in an inexplicable way. She certainly didn’t know him well enough to give credibility to any real feelings, and yet, she couldn’t deny she was drawn to him. She didn’t want him to leave Monday morning. She wanted him to look at her like he had yesterday evening, but he wasn’t looking at her at all.

She thought about approaching him and starting up a conversation. Unfortunately, she was securely back in her shell, and she wasn’t up to jumping that hurdle once again. She was surprised she’d jumped it in the first place.

She also took into account he hadn’t looked her way once tonight. At least, not that she’d seen.

“Nobody puts Katie in the corner.”

Katie looked over her right shoulder, wincing at the quote, the champagne halfway to her mouth. A popular movie quote…of course Travis MacGuire stood directly behind her. He always thought he was funny…even when he wasn’t.
