Slade

We pull onto the highway, and I floor it.

“Who were those people?” She grips her seat belt. “If you aren’t a spy, then who are you?”

“I’m yours.” I tell her the truth.

“I need more than that, Slade. I need to know what the heck is happening right now. I’m scared.”

Why does her declaration feel like a knife between my ribs?

I check my mirrors and slow down some. No one’s tailing us. There’s no immediate danger. When I reach out and take her hand, she lets me.

“You don’t have to be scared.”

“People were shooting at us. You could’ve been hurt.” She squeezes my hand. “Tell me what’s going on. This whole time, I was thinking maybe you were a spy or something. I mean, you have all these skills, and you can catch glass bottles before they hit the floor, and you have guns, and you … you know, you talk to cats and stuff, so—”

“Not cats. Just Walter.” I shrug.

“He’s the only cat that talks to you?”

“Yeah.” I keep an eye on the rearview mirror. “I don’t make a habit of hanging around other animals to see if I can hear them. And I’m well aware the voice is probably in my head somehow, especially since I had the injury, but I swear it’s him. It’s his voice.”

“You sound like a whackadoodle, and I’m here for every second of it, you nutjob.” Walter snickers from the backseat.

“And he’s so rude. Even when I was still working enforcement, I was never half as rude as that damn cat.”

“Enforcement?” She raises her brows as she glances at me. “You were a cop?”

I almost choke on my spit. “A cop? No.”

“Then what?”

I’ve thought of so many different ways to tell her, but I can’t even think of how to get started now that it’s come down to it. I guess I just need to take a leap of faith. She’s worth it, and I know our love is worth it.

“I used to be part of the Sardinia family.”

“Is that like a place that puts those tiny little fish into cans or something?”

I have to stifle a laugh. “No, you’re thinking about sardines.”

“Right. Sardines.” She sounds skeptical. “So if you don’t own a fish-in-a-can empire, then what do you have to do with sardines?”

“Sardinia,” I correct gently. “It’s a well-known family in the city. They own the courts, the cops, and every illegal enterprise you can imagine. Gambling—”

“Like bingo?” She squints. “I’ve always thought there was something suspicious about all those old people going to bingo nights.”

“Something like that, sure.” I wish I could put into words how abso-fucking-lutely adorable she is, but I can’t. “Gambling, drugs, all the bad things out there in the world—the Sardinias control them. I used to play a big part in all of it.”

“You mean all the bad stuff?”

“Yes.” I wish I could hold back the truth from her, but she’s the one person in the world who I want to tell my truth to, all of it, no matter how ugly.
