Chapter Thirteen
We get into Jessica’s car, and it feels weird riding in so low to the ground after being in Mitch’s truck and my brief ride in Logan’s SUV. It’s really comfortable and I almost wish that we weren’t just driving right down the street.
There’s a spot right in the front, that she easily backs into, I guess because she thinks that I must have a lot of stuff. I really could have just walked back and had Mitch give me a ride or walked, my stuff isn’t that heavy, but Jess seemed so excited about going with me, so I couldn’t say no.
I quickly look around the parking lot, to see if Mitch is back yet, and I spot his truck near the far end. I find myself, without really thinking about it, also looking for Logan’s SUV, and when I don’t see it I feel a little disappointed. I’m not sure why. I feel bad, still, about running out when we were eating dinner and since I’m leaving, and probably won’t be seeing him again, ever, I feel like I need to apologize and explain myself.
We head inside, Jess right behind me, and I knock on Mitch’s door. I look up and down the hall as we wait, sure that at any moment Logan is going to show up. Mitch opens the door to the room and we go in. His eyes widen at the sight of Jess.
“Who’s this?”
“Oh,” I say, “Jess, this is Mitch, my boyfriend, Mitch this is Jess.”
“Nice to meet you,” he says.
She nods and smiles as she looks around the room.
“So, what’s up? Where have you been today?”
Whoops. I guess I forgot to text him and tell him about Burgers-R-Us. The thought had crossed my mind, a few times actually, but I was so wrapped up in my day of work.
“Yeah... sorry. I got a job today, not too far away.”
“Oh, good,” he says. “So I guess that means you can move out soon.”
His voice has a weird tone to it. I can’t quite figure out if he’s irritated, or something else entirely. Weird. I almost get the feeling that he was maybe expecting me to stay here longer. I’m not really sure what to think about it, so I quickly push the thoughts out of my mind.
“Yeah... actually, that’s what Jess is doing here. I wasn’t sure if you had time to help me, so she offered to drive my stuff back to her place.”
Mitch raises his eyebrows and looks at Jess. I can tell now, for sure, that he’s not happy about the whole situation. It doesn’t make sense though. I just assumed that when he helped me get out of Greenville, that he wanted me to get a job and a place to live. Why is he acting so strange right now?
Without saying anything, Mitch pulls my duffel bags out from under his bed, hands one of them to each of us and then gives me my small bag of other stuff.
