Meera Sandhu

Meera Sandhu (full name: Meerindar Kaur Sandhu)

Call me old fashioned, complicated or communicationally encumbered, but I have a landline and a cell phone and they both take voice messages. I was putting my key into the door and I could hear the landline ringing. If I hurried, maybe I would get there in time to answer, but maybe not. And if it were important, they would call back or leave a message. I let it ring.

Although I am not completely OCD, I do indeed deploy regular routines and compulsions, some of which I am attempting to modify, and there are others in place forever. For example, it does not matter whether I am coming off a graveyard, days, or a swing shift; the first thing I always do is make myself a good meal. I refuse to listen to voicemails, or read emails until I have recharged my central nervous system, stomach, and changed into comfy clothes.

It had been a particularly difficult shift. I’ve been working as a cop for four years, trying to make it to the big monumental fifth year benchmark, but I still had my doubts about this career choice. The job was not getting any easier. However, after I had earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology, I had to choose a direction. What can you do with a BA in sociology? I thought about taking more sociology and getting an MA, but what can you do with that degree? The other option would then be to move on to a Piled higher and Deeper (PhD), and then where would I be? One of my friends went to law school, but I knew I did not want to do three years more of student level poverty at university, either. So when my carpool mate, Nicole, went to a Vancouver Police Department recruitment lecture at the UBC Student Union Building, I tagged along to kill some time until it was carpool takeoff time. The PowerPoint presentation was not too boring, or polished, and the starting pay scale was attractive. It also turned out that after all the trouble they had in the Richmond fire department the VPD were proactively recruiting brown skinned women. And that was my ticket into the organization.

I was cutting up veggies, sautéing onions and garlic, simmering a pungent aromatic tikka masala when the landline telephone rang again. I glanced at the call display, but no name displayed and the number was not familiar so I did not pick up. Let them leave a message.

“Hi Meera, it is Morgan Elliott calling, not sure if you remember me or not. We have met a few times over the past couple of years. Well, twice actually, once at Jimmy Swanson’s birthday party, and then again at the memorial service. His sister, Delia, gave me your number. Well, actually, she gave me this number, your cell phone number, and two email addresses, too. Delia is the epitome of encouragement. At any rate, this is just a social call, nothing serious, of course, I called earlier, but did not leave a message.
