Chapter 28

Merrick Davidson

Startling awake from yet another dream of my lovely wife’s death, I choked in a sudden breath, a light sheen of perspiration coating my body. It only took a couple seconds to focus on reality, but something was different. My eyelids rounding, I looked down, seeing my arms wrapped around Lena. I wasn’t tied up anymore. She let me go earlier.

The rushing adrenaline from the dream calmed as I studied her features. Tenderly touching her cheek, my heartbeat quickened, my ribs contracting to build pressure in my chest. I never knew skin could be this soft. It was like touching the finest silk ever made.

My fingers raked through her hair, slowly letting the satiny tresses trickling through from blonde to teal. Groaning, I did it again, mesmerized by the feel of this woman. She was everything I’d always dreamed about. Save for the crazy.

My palm on the side of her face, I gently lifted to get a full view. My breaths shallowing, a knot stuck in my throat, excitement prickling all my nerves. I guess I could overlook the crazy. There were worse things a man could have for a wife. A cheater, for instance. A liar, backstabber, betrayer. Crazy wasn’t so bad compared to what I was currently married to.

Not a single, iota trace of sadness remaining, there was nothing but abhorrence for Joanna. How quickly things turned around these last few days. She was a despicable person, unfit to be anyone’s wife. Selfish and egotistical, she probably was a bit of a narcissist, too, now that I thought about it. She sure as hell was good at gaslighting.

A notion occurring to me, my stomach turned over. I wasn’t restricted anymore. I could get out of this bed. Make a phone call! I could finally call a lawyer since Lena never let me the other day.

Carefully easing my arm from beneath her, I gradually rose from the bed, trying not to disturb her. Searching around, I couldn’t find my phone, but I found hers. Activating the screen to do a google search, I paused, my heart banging on my ribs. Her background picture was of me and her taken that weekend the four of us went to the beach. My head tilting, I examined the image, my bottom lip pulling taut. Huh, we actually looked good together, like we could be a real couple. Of course, the photo was innocent, just the two of us sitting at the table on the house’s back patio, but we were both smiling brightly, looking rather happy.

My sight flitted to her through my lashes. That weekend was the first time I found myself attracted to her; to anyone other than Joanna. Had she been attracted to me then, as well? She said she’d known for a while she was in love with me, was it all the way back to Galveston?

Shifting my weight to one leg, my focus traveled along her frame, my head shaking in disbelief. My god, she was fucking gorgeous.
