An Encouraging Story

It is possible to grow a teen space over time. Librarian Charli Osborne, from Oxford, Michigan, tells how she grew her teen space from an alcove with two walls of shelving and four chairs into a 1,200 square-foot teen space with a 10,000-item collection over the course of about eight years. She collected circulation statistics, which ultimately led to getting a separate line-item in the collection budget. She began doing programming for teens, and as more and more teens used the library, they began to demand their own space. When an opportunity arrived to repurpose some space within the library, community surveys overwhelming demanded more teen space. By collecting and sharing statistics, ruthlessly advocating for teens, and getting teens engaged in the library’s services, she was able to create a space where none had existed before (Flowers 2011, 50).
