Daisy couldn’t say what woke her the next morning. It wasn’t the bear that, with Cody’s help, they had taken turns chasing from the kitchen. It wasn’t the sound of the bell mare anywhere near camp. And it wasn’t Jo who breathed deeply next to her. Daisy’s arm gently rose and fell with each of Jo’s breaths. Her eyes flew open. Her arm was draped over Jo’s hip! What was it doing there! A zing of pleasure rushed through Daisy’s body, but she quickly pinched it off. She had to move before Jo woke up. What would she say if she realized that Daisy was holding her? What would her friends say if they were to wake up and find them spooned from shoulder to ankle?

Desire pulsed through Daisy urging her to pull Jo’s hips closer. She must be dreaming. Just because Jo had looked at her from across the fire didn’t mean that she would welcome Daisy’s touch.

She had to move.

But Jo’s body felt so good next to hers.

She had to turn. Stealthily. First, she took the weight off. No movement. She would sigh with relief, but she couldn’t breathe, not until she extracted herself. Slowly, she rotated onto her back, pulling her arm to her own body. Safe, she kept scooching until she faced the other direction, away from Jo. Not three breaths later, she heard the jingle of Cody’s tags followed by a quiet but deep yawn. Jo rose up on her elbow, and Daisy forced herself to take deep breaths praying that she had managed to cover her mistake.

Letting in very little cold air, Jo slowly extracted herself from the bag. Daisy heard her pull on her jeans and boots. Then she was gone, Cody trotting after her. With the mattress to herself, Daisy rolled into the middle and stretched. She pulled her clothes into an embrace for a few minutes warming them before forcing herself into the cold morning. The last thing she wanted was for Jo to catch her in bed when she returned from gathering the stock.

By the time Jo got back, Daisy had been hard at work in the kitchen long enough that she had a cup of coffee in Earl’s hands and was concentrating hard on getting her homestyle potatoes browned to perfection.

“Try it yet?” Jo asked Earl. Jo didn’t even look in Daisy’s direction. Her gaze was locked on the fire.

Had she noticed Daisy’s arm draped over her waist? Was that why she was being weird and distant? Ridiculous, Daisy scolded herself. This is how she always is.

Earl raised the liquid that was as dark as he was to his lips. “Oh, man! Nothin’ in the world like cowboy coffee!” His booming voice matched his large frame.

From inside a nearby tent, Daisy heard one of the others holler, “Did I hear someone say ‘coffee’?”

“Better come quick before Jo polishes off the pot!” Earl bellowed. “That’ll get up the stragglers! You girls get any sleep?”

Daisy glanced at Jo who was intent on pouring her cup of coffee.
