Olivia shakes my arm.

“Hey, I think we both fell asleep!”

I open my eyes and see the shadowy form of Olivia above me. “I guess we wore ourselves out, huh?” I chuckle as I sit up and run my fingers through Olivia’s soft hair.

“You’d better take me back to Cara’s. She’s probably been up all night worried about me.”

“Oh, I’m pretty sure she knew you were gonna be out late tonight, and the thought of it was making her happy.”

“Maybe. But going home is the respectable thing to do. We hardly know each other. I’m gonna have to leave, eventually. There’s just no point in getting too attached, right?”

“We fundamentally disagree on that, Miss. Olivia.”

“It’s not a disagreement. It’s just the reality. I never meant for things to go as far as they did. Please take me back to Cara’s.”

I slide out of the back of the truck and help Olivia out too.

Once we’re standing beside each other, Olivia throws her arms around me and squeezes tight.

“You’re such a great guy, Billy. I don’t know how I got so lucky to meet you this week.”

“It’s me who's thinking the other way around, sweetheart. And now the thought of you going back to Chicago is tearing me apart. But I’m not going to let it get in my way.”

“You’re falling so hard and fast—it scares me a little,” she whispers. “But I like it too. I feel the same way about you that I think you do about me.”

“Then I’m just gonna ask you to dance with me here, beautiful. Just let me have one dance with you. Even if I take you back to Cara’s and you head back to Chicago tomorrow. At least I’ll know we danced.”

“There’s no music,” she replies.

“If you can’t hear it—”

I take my hand and place it on her rapid beating heart.

“Feel it.”

“I’m pretty sure this was in a movie or something.”

“Probably, but just go along with it.”

“Ok,” she says in a tone of surrender.

I drop my hands down to her waist and we gently sway to our silent music. It’s not long before Olivia is moving in closer and resting her head against my chest. The sound of her contented sighs sends a shiver of pleasure through my body. It’s clear to me now that what I want for the rest of my life is to make Olivia happy. That will give me greater joy than I could find anywhere else. I have this feeling that someone hurt this girl bad, and she’s just afraid to let herself be loved. But I’m going to love her and there’s no way to stop me.

Our dance takes on a more playful tone. I swing her around and then pick her up as she’s in the middle of a giggle fit.

“You and I are gonna be married someday,” I say.

“You say that with such certainty.”

“Because it’s certain. In fact, I think we ought to get married in the morning. I know you might not think you know me very well, but I can assure you that I’m the kind of guy where you get what you see.
