Chapter Fifteen
LIKE AN answer to a birthday wish, Tristão’s heavy lashes fluttered and the deep blue of his eyes appeared. For a second, he just stared into space, but then his glance flicked to Maury and he smiled. “Hi.”
“Hi. Didn’t mean to wake you, but I was actually hoping to see your eyes.”
Tris fluttered his lashes elaborately. “These eyes?”
Maury snorted and put a finger under Tristão’s chin, turning his head toward him. “Your pupils, crazy man.” Maury stared at Tris as clinically as he could manage. “Only a little dilated. Good. How are you feeling?”
“Tired.”
“That’s to be expected. Any nausea? Headache?”
“No. The lump on my head hurts, but no headache.”
“Good. Need anything before you go back to sleep for the night?”
“Water.”
Maury spied a pitcher and some glasses on a cabinet by the door. He poured a couple of glasses and brought one to Tris, who sat up to take it.
Big mistake. The blanket fell to his waist, uncovering yards of creamy skin stretched over hard, lean muscle. If it weren’t for the scars, Maury would barely have believed this pristine being could be a bull rider, but there they were—a history of cuts, abrasions, and broken bones written across his torso.
If Maury wasn’t prepared for the visual, he was totally blindsided by the flare of heat that seared through his groin, expanding his cock like a gas balloon. Yes, he always reacted to Tristão, but this was like someone flipped his hot-and-bothered switch. He wanted to jump up, but in those sleep pants, where the hell would he put the evidence? Instead he leaned forward so the bottom of the sweatshirt covered his crotch.
Tris took the glass and drank, then shivered.
“Hey, get under the covers. You’ll freeze.” Maury picked up the edge of the quilt, which gave him an unneeded view of another couple of inches of bare skin. Is he wearing anything?
Tris handed back the water glass and scooted down, letting Maury pull the quilt to his chin—a much safer view. Tris shivered again.
“Need another blanket?”
He shook his head.
Taking a deep breath and surreptitiously pulling at the hem of the sweatshirt to cover any remnants of his boner, Maury stood. “I’m going to stay nearby to make sure you’re okay.”
A small, muffled voice said, “You don’t have to. I’m okay.”
“I’d rather.”
“Mkay.”
Maury walked to the wall switch and turned off the light, leaving only a small nightlight burning on a low table. He felt his way to the chair in the corner.
For a few moments, he sat quietly staring into the semidarkness; then some smothered words came from the direction of the bed. “Did you say something to me, Tris?”
They repeated, equally unintelligible.
“Sorry, can’t understand you.” He stood and walked closer.
Third repeat, no better.
“Tris, get your head out from the pillow so I can understand you.”
“Blah mmft sleep blah eem.”
Maury sat on the edge of the bed again. He spoke softly. “Are you awake or talking in your sleep?”
No answer.
Maury raised a hand, wanting to touch Tristão’s face, but dropped it.
