Chapter 13

Twenty minutes later, Cowboy emerged from the room where they were having their meeting.

“All good,” he proclaimed.

His face was lit with a smile that reassured me so. I was not used to a problem that didn’t result in being treated like dirt. That was the way of my old family. But my new friends took problems in stride and still treated each other with love and respect. It was an entirely new concept for me.

“So, no one is upset that my father was making up stories about me being kidnapped and that bikers had something to do with it?” I asked.

“No,” Cowboy replied easily. “It’s nothing we can’t handle. We’ve dealt with worse. We have the truth on our side.”

I had not looked at it that way. Suddenly, any anxiety that I had melted away. I felt totally safe and welcomed. The urge to run away disappeared.

“So, you guys aren’t mad at me then, for real?” I asked.

“Baby,” he said, and I thought I would melt. “None of this is your fault. The only thing you can control is telling me the truth. I would have never blamed you, but I did have a nagging feeling there was a connection. And that’s why I pushed. You must always tell me the truth.”

“Always?” I asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” he said. “You are welcome to stay here in Winona as long as you like. We have to have a conversation about that later. First, we need to do something about your wardrobe.”

I froze with insecurity. It was such an out-of-the-blue remark I didn’t know what to make of it.

“You didn’t exactly pack a lot of stuff,” he explained. “I think I could get some of the ladies to clean out their closets, but in the meantime, let’s go get you some things.”

I paused to review my meager bank account. I probably should offer the garage that diagnosed my car some money. That notion somehow got lost in events.

“Let’s go back over to Old Man’s Garage,” I suggested. “Kim said there was Harley wear?”

Cowboy arched his brow as his face painted with a naughty grin.

“Holy shit,” he remarked. “You would look so delicious in a Harley outfit. I was thinking of hitting a little place that is kind of biker’s resale clothes but let’s do this. Let’s get you something for the party tonight but let’s get you one or two things for every day. Then we can hit the general store for whatever else you need.”

He craned down to look at me directly to capture my full attention.

“And then we’ll talk,” he said firmly.

It wasn’t a meanness that he spoke with when he was firm. He didn’t spark anxiety or fear in me.

“And then we’ll talk,” I echoed. “You have it all planned out for me.”

“I do,” he grinned. “I am that kinda guy.”

It was getting late in the day, so I gathered our shopping would be quick and efficient. We mounted the bike and headed back to Old Man’s Garage. Kim was working the cash register as we entered.
