Chapter Eleven
âI accept,â John stated in a hurry, before she could take her sudden proposal back. âSam, get up off your duff! Youâve got a job to do.â
Sam blinked his eyes sleepily, then jackknifed to a sitting position. âIs there a raid? Whatâs happening?â He looked around wildly. John realized he was probably searching for his firearm and primed to hit the ground running.
âEasy, brother. Weâre in Austin,â John said softly, and Sam relaxed as if someone had pulled the air out of him. His brown hair was stood on end, but John could almost hear his blood pressure calming. âDidnât mean to scare the hell out of you.â
âMan, I donât know. Guess I was dreaming.â Sam looked at Daisy, who wore the cutest expression of alarm. âSorry, Daisy.â
âItâs fine. John should be more delicate when he disturbs you.â
Sam rose, his face returning to the teasing expression they all knew so well. Cagily, he said, âSo now that Iâm awake, am I performing ministerial duties?â
âIs that really all you came here for?â John demanded.
âI came to see Daisy, and to bring the impending bundles of joy their first present from Uncle Handsome Sam.â
Daisy laughed, but John scowled. âDaisyâs asked me to marry her.â He said it with pride.
âThatâs awesome!â Sam laughed. âI hope you donât regret it, beautiful. I swear Iâm the better man,â he teased, going to kiss Daisyâs cheek. John pulled him back when he deemed Sam was being just a bit too attentive.
âThatâs enough. Easy, Romeo.â
Sam looked at Daisy. âYou donât have to marry him, you know. Iâd do the honors in a heartbeat.â
John sighed. âYou donât even want to get married.â
âNo, but I can make an exception in this case.â
âThatâs enough. You have a wedding to perform, and itâs not your own.â
âAnd perform it I will!â Sam rubbed his hands together. âWe donât have a second to spare.â
âWell, actually,â Daisy said, âwe need to spare a few moments.â
John put up his hands. âYou asked, I accepted, we have a willing pastor to officiate. Donât slow us down, Daisy. Weâre over the hump here.â
âAnd it wasnât easy getting over that hump,â Daisy agreed. âBut we can do a lot of good with our marriage, if we play our cards right.â
John sank into a chair, stared at the woman he couldnât quite seem to catch. âLetâs skip playing cards and just get married already.â
âThe thing is, we need to do this right. To do it right, we need Madame Matchmaker.â
âWeâre already matched. Sheâs had her hands in our relationship up to her elbows. Maybe not as much as she would have liked, but enough.â John was eager to get the âI doâsâ said.
âNot necessarily,â Sam said, and John frowned.
âWhose side are you on? You do realize this woman has eluded me for years? Do you really want to give her a reason to get away from me again?â John demanded.
âHereâs the thing,â Daisy said, ignoring the good-natured ribbing between the men. Sometimes it didnât sound good-natured, but she knew they had a relationship that went deeper than any silly argument.
