While I’ve been inspecting her admirer, she’s spotted me and she’s heading in my direction. I think at first that she’s changed her mind, and that we’ll be spending the evening together. I get that completely wrong.

Her eyes flick to me momentarily, then she eases into the small space the group have left for her. She orders a drink from the barman. He’s rushed over to make sure Beth doesn’t serve her.

“I’ll get that,” Leroy says, “and I’ll have another ale.” The barman nods stiffly and reluctantly does his job.
