UPON ARRIVING AT Fort Leavenworth, Morgan stepped out of the vehicle, where she was met by a pair of guards to escort her to the temporary command center. The waning sunlight from the late afternoon dimmed, dipping beneath the trees to the west. Moments later, she walked into a conference room that had been outfitted at her request. Monitors hung on every wall, computer terminals scattered on various desks, each one manned by Army personnel.

“Everyone, listen up,” a barrel-chested colonel barked. “This is your new director and you will address her as such. You will not be told her name, but I expect full cooperation and respect just the same. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir,” said the Army personnel in near unison.

Morgan thanked Col. Hank Ketchum for his introduction and guided her to a specially designed work station.

“We’ve been testing all the tech, Director,” Ketchum said. “Dr. Z has been most gracious with his time to make sure that we have all the details ironed out.”

“He’s good at that,” she said. “And if everything runs smoothly tonight, we’ll be out of your hair before you know it.”

“Please, Director, take all the time you need. We’re for you, especially given the sensitive nature of this mission.”

“You’ve been briefed?”

“Actually, no, I haven’t. That’s how I know just how secret this must be. All I was told is that I wasn’t to refer to you by your name or tell anyone what your name is. I’ve been involved in some top secret missions before—but not like this.”

“You don’t recognize me then, do you?”

Ketchum shook his head.

“Good,” she said. “Don’t even try to remember me. It’ll be to your detriment in the long run.”

He gestured toward her chair. “If you need anything, please let me or one of my staff know. We’re here to serve you.”

“Thank you, Colonel.”

Outside, Big Earv and Mia were sitting in a van near the outskirts of Leavenworth’s federal U.S. Penitentiary, home to some of the country’s most dangerous criminals. Once a prisoner arrived at Leavenworth, there were very few ways to leave that included being alive. Most of the ways out were in coffins or body bags after dying of old age or at the hands of fellow hitmen. A rare, live exit by a prisoner who supposedly could secure valuable information about The Alliance? That was sure to arrest the group’s attention.

“How are we looking out there, guys?” Morgan asked.

Big Earv and Mia were positioned in an SUV near the only road that had any line of sight on the facility. All transfers took place along this area, though most of the time the feds parked a row of cars farther away from the doors, creating a visual barrier. But this time, the barrier was removed, making it easy for any snipers to remain in the shadows.

“We’re clear here,” Big Earv said. “No sign of anyone.”

“Keep me posted if anything changes,” Morgan said.

She checked her watched and leaned back in her chair. The exchange was supposed to take place within the hour.
