Chapter 23

Reyna

When I pushed the door open, Mazrith was sitting at the huge table, staring at the map. Plates of bread, meats, pastries, and cheese covered the other side of the table. “You wanted me?” I said, instantly regretting my word choice when he snapped his head round to face me.

He looked at my neck first, then at my face. “Are you able to eat?”

“I don’t know. But I am hungry.” He stood up, resting his staff against his chair before picking up and passing me a plate. His furs were gone, just a simple dark shirt covering his huge torso. He gestured at the food, then moved to the cabinet that held the tumblers and drinks.

I moved along the platters, choosing foods that I hoped wouldn’t hurt my throat, then chose a seat a few along from the one he had been sitting in. The fireplace was lit and the curtains open, and the combination of the warm glowing firelight and the sparkling sky outside was surprisingly cozy.

“Your rooms aren’t like the rest of the palace,” I said.

He didn’t answer until he had poured the drinks and brought them over. “Mead,” he said.

I took it from him gratefully. It was like drinking liquid comfort, the pleasant sensation numbing my throat and warming my chest.

“I believe it was my stepmother’s magic controlling the rope today,” he said tightly as he sat down.

“So does Voror.” I picked at a piece of bread, then chewed experimentally. It didn’t hurt too much when I swallowed, so I tucked into the rest of the food on my plate with more enthusiasm.

“We need to find a way of keeping you alive.”

I could help my snorted laugh. “Through more of those? Good luck with that.”

His eyes darkened. “I do not need luck,” he growled.

I closed my eyes a moment, then opened them again. “Look, the faster we solve your riddle, the faster I can serve my purpose to you.”

He frowned, looking down at my hand. Looking for the ring I wasn’t wearing. “At which point you will attempt to escape our betrothal,” he said quietly.

That wasn’t the response I had expected. He was absolutely right, but it wasn’t the direction I needed this conversation to go.

“At which point, you can overthrow the Queen and end the games,” I said firmly. “Or at least choose a better champion.”

“I told you I would help you and I was unable to,” he said, still staring at my ringless hand.

Was his anger giving way to guilt? I stared at him. The more I looked, the more I was sure I could see the scars lining his face.

Memories flooded me in a rush, most of them from those two nights in the mountain. Him, under whatever glamor he used, covered in scars from head to foot; the huge wound on his chest; the vision of him and his mother. I rubbed my hands over my face, trying to snap out of the thoughts.

“You did help me. You saved my life, again.”
