THE BREAK-ROOM WAS the coolest place in the clinic so she stopped by for a sit down before attempting the hot walk back to her apartment.

“Hello, stranger,” Donna said. She was sitting at a table, leg up, headphones around her neck, and a pile of colored paper surrounding her. “I heard you come in, but I didn't want to shout in case it was an emergency.”

“What are you doing here?” Katie asked, grabbing a diet soda from the refrigerator.

“It's a damn sight cooler than my house here,” grumbled Donna. “Plus, the wifi's better, so I had Paul Haliday bring me down after lunch. Anna-Leigh's got me folding napkins for the Founder's Day celebrations.” She gestured to the colored papers around her.

“Need a hand?” asked Katie. Anything to take her mind off Carson. Anything to stop her going home and questioning herself constantly about whether she was doing the right thing.

“Grab a seat,” Donna said. “And a Pop Tart, if you want one.”

For a while they worked in companionable silence, then Katie felt Donna's eyes on her. “What?” she said, putting the napkin she was working on down.

“You're not going to tell me?” asked Donna.

“Tell you what?”

Donna cleared her throat and raised an eyebrow.

“What?” Katie said. But she could already feel herself blushing again.

“Listen, half the town knows that you took Carson out for a walk in the woods. But given that I'm your best friend around these parts, only I know that there's a solid chance things might have gotten hot and heavy. So, did they?”

Katie squirmed. She couldn't tell. She'd promised she'd tell no one.

“Aha,” said Donna. “So something did happen and you've been sworn to silence.”

Katie grimaced and Donna laughed.

“Fine, fine, I won't grill you for details, girl.” She started humming under her breath and folding napkins.

“Don.”

“What?”

“The satisfied humming is... annoying.”

Donna sniffed, but stopped humming and started whistling instead.

And Katie broke. She hadn't told anyone, Donna had guessed, that wasn't her fault. “I don't know what I'm doing,” she said.

“Been that long, has it?” said Donna. “Well, when a little girl loves... a little girl in your case, they—”

“Not what I meant,” Katie interrupted before things got too detailed.

Donna sighed and kept folding napkins. “It's not good to regret things,” she said. “And in the end, we tend to regret the things we didn't do more than the things that we did. I've been there, girl. Trust me.”

“You have?” Katie asked, folding napkins obediently. Donna was notoriously close-mouthed about her personal life.

Donna put her napkin down. “There was someone in medical school,” she said. “I had a chance, and I didn't take it. And I've regretted it ever since. I didn't think things would work out with him, so I didn't give him a chance.”

“Him?” Katie said before she could stop herself.

Donna ran a hand through her crew cut. “You know, the haircut always throws people off. But for your information, I fell in love with a person, not a penis. And in this particular case, yes, it happened to be a guy, though I'm not denying I've had my fair share of women as well.
