CHAPTER TEN

UNFORTUNATELY, THE NEXT day was busy, as was the entire rest of the week. Between clinics and patients and side trips to the village to make house calls, Sara didn’t think she’d spent more than an hour in Gabe’s company totally alone—though they’d sent plenty of longing looks each other’s way. She dreamed about him at night, too, and her body still sang from the kisses and caresses they’d shared. For the first time in a long time, she felt free.

Free to choose what she wanted. Free to do as she pleased, without her control crows coming to peck at her happiness. And sure, maybe it was all just temporary, but wasn’t Luke always going on at her to get a life? Well, here in Costa Rica she could have one, at least for the next three weeks.

For eleven years, she’d stayed in a loveless marriage with a cheating liar, all in the name of giving her son a good life. But when Luke had started to pick up some of his father’s bad habits in middle school, like lying to Sara about where he was going and who he was spending his time with, she’d realized that what children saw was just as important as what they were told. If she wanted her son to live a happy, healthy life, she needed to be a role model and live one herself. So she’d filed for divorce and hadn’t looked back since.

Luke had turned out just fine. Sara liked to imagine this fling with Gabe would turn out just fine, too.

By the following Saturday, their next day off from the clinic, she was keyed up tighter than an overtuned guitar string, hoping they’d finally be able to continue where they’d left off at some point today.

But first, laundry.

She carried her bag of dirty clothes to the facility near the edge of the compound and got busy sorting lights from darks. Through the chain-link fencing, she spotted some local boys playing soccer in the relatively empty parking lot beside the compound. There weren’t washers and dryers, since they were in the middle of the rain forest, after all. But there were several large, deep sinks with ample clean water tanks and clotheslines to dry your things on after they were clean.

She threw a pile of light-colored clothes and underthings into the nearest sink, then tossed a scoop of detergent over them before filling the basin with tepid water. Up to her elbows in suds, she scrubbed, swishing and swirling her items in her best impression of a washing machine. As she worked, a group of about ten boys gathered near the fence. She recognized a few of them from the last clinic and waved, water dripping from her fingertips.

“Looks like you have a fan club,” Gabe said, hiking his chin toward the boys as he walked into the tent. It was probably Sara’s imagination, but the air seemed to fizz whenever he was around. Or maybe that was just her bloodstream.
