Shona looked at her daughter doubtfully. “Well, all right,” she said. “I’ll tell the captain you’re on your way. But you know how he hates to be kept waiting.”

She puffed out her cheeks and scowled, fiddling with a pretend moustache.

Charlie giggled. “I’ll be really quick. I promise!”

Shona left the room. Moments later Charlie heard the front door close.

Charlie scrambled to pull on her trousers while Random scanned the room with his sensors. “I’m afraid there is no sign of our little friend,” he said.

“Well, keep looking!” said Charlie. “Let’s hope we can find him before he tries to eat everything.”

Just as she spoke there was a crash downstairs then a loud rumble. Charlie knew right away what was happening. “The kitchen!” she said. “Come on!”

They hurtled down the stairs and along the corridor. Charlie grabbed the kitchen door and threw it open. The sight that greeted her was worse than she could have imagined.

The floor was strewn with food. There was cereal and sugar and crusts of bread. There were pools of milk and piles of squashed, half-eaten fruit. Bowls and containers were scattered on the counter. Her dad’s favourite coffee mug lay in three pieces on the floor.

Charlie stood frozen in the doorway. Random bobbed at her side.

“I think he went that way,” he said, and pointed to the back door. It stood half-open.

Charlie started towards it. “We have to go after him.”

But before she could reach it, a voice boomed behind her.

“What in the million moons of Macondo is going on here?”

Charlie spun round. Her father stood open-mouthed, looking at the mess. Maki pushed past, his eyes wide with amazement.
