GOING TO WORK IN NEAR-EARTH SPACE

Working in space can mean being physically located in space or on a celestial body while doing a job, or it can mean working remotely from Earth. For example, researchers at BioServe Space Technologies, a research center within the University of Colorado, can monitor experiments on the ISS by seeing the live feed from their microscope in a control room in Boulder, Colorado.1 Another example of remotely working in space is directing robotic repairs or manufacturing from a facility on Earth.

The first part of this chapter looks at Earth-focused activities that could not occur without the ability to go to space. They involve research and manufacturing intended primarily to improve life on Earth. After that, we look at the Earth-based activities needed to enable, complement, and support space exploration and settlements on celestial bodies.

Then we launch, exploring current and near-future jobs performed in off-Earth environments. We try to keep it real by staying within this solar system and relatively close to home—Low Earth Orbit and the Lunar surface—and within a time frame of roughly 2020–45.
