Julie Wheelwright in her excellent historical study ‘Amazons and Military Maids’ has this to say about the women who served in disguise and went to war cheerfully: ‘If being a man meant excelling at the epitome of masculine activity – the art of warfare – then the process of imitation was a success. Women proved at every level that they were as competent, as skilled, as aggressive, as deadly and as courageous as their male counterparts. But once sexually active, their entire identity was placed in jeopardy…’

Wheelwright is quite right about the dangers of engaging in sexual activity. Corrie had better watch out for that evil Master-at-Arms, Mr. Sly. He knows perfectly well that she is a woman, for he was part of the press gang that captured Corrie and dragged her aboard.
