CHAPTER TWENTY

June 15, 2036, Food Village Independent Grocery Store, Tucson, New Baja Republic

The automatic doors parted, and Cassie and Trev entered Food Village. Maria was stocking bread in the back, transferring loaves from a cart to the shelf. She smiled at Trev.

Cassie surveyed the store. A handful of customers strolled the aisles. There weren’t any gang thugs, or if there were, they were smart enough not to wear their jackets.

Being precognitive meant being obsessed with causality. Cassie had spent countless hours since her power manifested considering the complexities of foreseeing a future and either trying to avoid it or bring it to pass.

Every decision she made after a vision risked altering the future, but they could all be agonized over. Walking into the modest grocery store in southwest Tucson, Cassie questioned fate again.

Trev buying groceries at that exact time three days ago had set a series of events into motion that now had the team dealing with the Valencia Warriors and their mysterious backers. Cassie wondered what would have happened if he had gone to a different store or waited until the next day. Even an hour might have changed the flow of events.

Thinking up different scenarios wasn’t hard. Understanding the implications and how to respond to them was. “Did you think it would turn into such a big deal?”

Trev stopped and frowned. “I didn’t put much thought into it since I couldn’t just stand there while that guy harassed Maria. You mad at me?”

Cassie smiled and shook her head. “You’re becoming the man you’re destined to be. Why would I be mad about that?”

“Destiny, huh?” Trev grinned. “I don’t know about that, but I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. It’s worked out so far.”

Maria continued stocking the shelves as Trev and Cassie approached. “Hello, Trev. Hey, Cassie.”

“Hey, Maria,” Trev replied with a wave.

Cassie smiled at her. “We wanted to check on you to make sure everything’s okay and nobody’s messed with you again.”

Maria’s smile faded. “They haven’t come back if that’s what you’re asking. It won’t matter anyway. Bill told me to give them what they want, and it wouldn’t come out of my pay. He also said they wouldn’t come back for at least a month.”

Cassie stood beside the shelf. “We were also wondering about Max Nguyen.”

“Why?” Maria asked. “Please don’t hurt him. I know he joined that gang, but he tried to stop the other man. He really did.”

“We’re not looking for him to beat him up.” Trev shook his head. “What can you tell us about him?”

“He’s a sweet boy,” Maria replied. “He always has been. There’s never been a violent bone in his body. Then, that gang appears out of nowhere, and suddenly, he’s wearing one of their jackets. It doesn’t make sense.” She frowned. “He’s also talking about his great boss and how he has to protect and do what he says, but…”

“What is it?” Cassie pressed.

“I haven’t seen many Warriors, but most are like Sam,” Maria offered. “They’re mean, cocky, and spiteful. They try to throw their weight around.
