9 Sonny’s Discovery

Camella sat on the edge of her bed, her elbows locked as she placed her palms on the mattress. Rolling her head side to side, each thought seemed to stretch from her mind and into her shoulders. The midnight musician consumed her thoughts more than before, distorting the position where Andy once stood in them.

As her eyes took in the window, the ceiling, and the surrounding walls of her bedroom, she began to notice a flickering. Her sight changed like a poor radio frequency would for sound, and Camella knew—a vision was beginning. Her hands gripped the corners of her mattress. She found a place to sit and watch them, at least. She breathed in, controlling the pace of her heart.

A young man appeared as her room disappeared. A wooden seat creaked beneath her in replacement of her soft mattress. She sat beside the young man at a small, round table in a busy corner cafe. Camella followed the young man’s eyes to the white lettering on the windows, tracing the letters that spelled the town’s name and the iced coffee it advertised. She could feel his heart inside her chest, pulsating like a skipping record player. In front of them sat a stack of printed copies of newspaper clippings; the young man’s long fingers tapped the table beside them. His hair, shaved in a military style, accentuated the fullness of his cheeks.

His eyes were the most familiar to Camella, as if he had run here from a nearby ravine, still reflecting the dark seaweed and the cascading blues that rolled over surrounding stones.

He was meeting someone, and by appearances, he was early. A cup of ice water perspired in accordance with its owner’s attitude. Hope drummed within his fingertips, though his eyebrows followed the people that entered the shop with the doubt that only a traveler knows—who sits, observant, with the thoughts “what’s next?” and “what will I do when I’m there?”

The newspaper clippings, some more worn than others, had folded corners and softer creases. The top one had been printed days ago, and was therefore the most crisp. The young man folded and unfolded his napkin to smooth it out. Was he scared that the oil from his fingers would ruin it? It was clear to Camella that this top sheet was his greatest clue, or the most descriptive map, to an unknown treasure.

The young man leaned over it again as his hand spun his wallet against his thigh. He felt neither contentment nor impatience. This chair, in this coffee shop, in this busy town—he knew he was exactly where he should be. Camella was pulled forward, too, and his movements and his feelings became one with hers.

His mouth moved silently as he read the title of the article.
