FOURTEEN

HELIOS

Light streaming through the bedroom window wakes me. That’s actually kind of novel, because my shitty apartment’s windows only look out onto more buildings, and even if we had a view, Dax and I keep the blinds shut all the time.

I’m alone in the bed, one arm bent awkwardly because of the handcuff. As far as I can tell, I haven’t been touched at all overnight.

I glance at the bedside clock. The LED screen tells me it’s well past noon. Fuck, I slept a lot.

I rub my eyes and sit up, dragging the blanket with me to keep myself covered, and look around. No sign of Evan or Chorizo, but there’s water and a tray with a sandwich and apple slices on the nightstand. Part of me wants to toss everything aside, but the anger from last night has subsided, and I’m done being an idiot.

I start eating as I take in the room around me. The one door goes to the primary bathroom, and the other one out into the hall. There’s a sliding door to a balcony, and I see a small table and chair out there but no sign that anyone has been using it lately.

I don’t see bloodstains anywhere.

It’s a perfectly normal primary bedroom in a decently sized apartment.

Chorizo is the first to come into the room, likely alerted by my slight movement and the scent of the food. He bounds up and onto the bed, going straight for the sandwich.

Evan follows, looking alert and freshly showered, and he rolls his eyes at the dog. “Don’t let him fool you. I just fed him an hour ago.” His expression softens. “How are you holding up, H?”

I awkwardly pet Chorizo with my cuffed hand but keep the sandwich away from him. “All right, I guess.” I eye him. “Are you going to release me now, or am I going to be stuck cuffed to your bed?”

“I don’t know. Are you going to run to the door, or can we have a pleasant conversation and a nice afternoon doing puzzles?” he counters.

“I’m not going to run to the door,” I promise. I finish the sandwich and glare at him. “But I want to point out that keeping me against my will is also something an axe murderer would do.”

“No, an axe murderer would kill you with an axe,” Evan says smugly. “I’m just keeping you safe because you apparently don’t know how to keep your own damn self safe.” He smiles, though, and comes over. Rummaging through his pocket, he finally produces a key and holds it up. “Don’t make me chase you down again,” he warns.

I wait until he unlocks the manacle. My instincts scream at me to run, but I did see exactly how well that went last night.

I’m honestly just tired of it all.

So I stay where I am, and I roll my eyes when Evan smiles at me. He takes my wrist and starts rubbing at the reddened skin, soothing away the damage he caused by locking me up.
