TWENTY-TWO

We took off from the channel beside the remote island, police boats having closed in and taken over the scene. After the explosive lodged in Harvey’s brain had been detonated, our first call had been to Jane, informing the Key West Chief of Police that we’d hunted down two of the attackers and taken them out. Jane was aboard one of the early boats to arrive, and she’d handled our statements, then motored us out the channel to our tied-off Cessna.

“Thank you both,” Jane said. “I’m not sure how this all would’ve ended if you two hadn’t happened to be flying by.”

It’s far from over, I thought, knowing that I’d managed to become number one on El Muerto’s list of enemies.

But I didn’t mention what Muerto had said, or that Harvey had informed the illegal arms dealers who I was. We just took the thanks and shifted the subject to the initial encounter.

“Officer Brooks was hit,” she said, hanging her head slightly. “He was shot during the initial barrage. Two rounds center mass. He was wearing his bulletproof vest, but he’s in bad shape.”

We fell silent a moment, then I said, “What about the agents in the van?”

“They both survived, miraculously. Though they’re banged up, as you can imagine. They managed to live on a pocket of air and then swam for it just after the criminals left.”

I added Officer Brooks and the other officers to my mental list of victims either killed or injured by Muerto and his men. It made seven in the past week alone, and those were just the ones we knew about.

“I guess Harvey wasn’t lying about the thing being a micro-explosive,” Jane added. “I’m sorry he can no longer testify for you.”

I nodded gravely. Part of me was glad that Harvey was gone—that the loose cannon would no longer be the headache that he’d been. Jane hadn’t liked holding him in the cell on Stock Island, and at least no more officers would be in danger because of his presence. But a bigger part of me couldn’t help feeling like I’d just lost my chance at having the case dismissed.

We told Jane that we’d be in touch, then climbed into the Cessna with Atticus.

It was six o’clock by the time we were back on course for our island home, the big sun nearing the end of its arc. I glanced at Ange, then Atticus, who quickly nestled into the backseat. It’d been a hell of a long day, beginning with the long morning run and then the flight to Miami. But it wasn’t over yet, and given what Muerto had said, I knew that rest wouldn’t be on my agenda for quite some time.

“What did Harvey whisper to you?” Ange said, adjusting the yoke as we soared over the northern tip of Big Torch Key.

I thought back to the unexpected, barely coherent words he’d whispered to me before Muerto had ended his life.

“Utter nonsense, most likely. But—”

I stopped as my phone buzzed. It was Maddox.
