Born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, 10 January 1903. Won scholarship to Leeds School of Art, where first met Henry Moore, 1920; studied sculpture at Royal College of Art, London, 1921–4 (diploma). Awarded Yorkshire County Council travelling scholarship, 1924; lived in Florence and Siena. Married sculptor John Skeaping in Florence, 1925; lived in Rome for 18 months before moving to London, where son Paul born 1929 (killed in air crash while serving in the Royal Air Force, 1953); divorced 1933. Triplets, one son, two daughters, by artist Ben Nicholson born 1934; married Nicholson, 1936; separated 1951. Member, Seven and Five Society, London, 1931–6; Abstraction-Création group, Paris, 1933–5; only woman member, Unit One, London, 1934. Visited France frequently, 1932–6; met Picasso, Braque, Mondrian, Brancusi, Gabo, Herbin and Hélion. Moved to Cornwall with her family, 1939; purchased Trewyn Studio, St Ives, 1949. Founder-member, Penwith Society of Arts, Cornwall, 1949. Recipient of gold medal for sculpture, Hoffman Wood Trust, Leeds, 1951; second prize, Unknown Political Prisoner competition, London, 1953; Grand Prix, São Paulo Bienal, 1959; Lion of St Mark plaque, International Festival of Films on Art, Venice, 1962; Foreign Minister’s award, Tokyo Biennale, 1963; Grand Prix, Salon International de la Femme, Nice, 1970; honorary doctorates from University of Birmingham, 1960; University of Leeds, 1961; University of Exeter, 1966; University of Oxford, 1968; University of London, 1970; University of Manchester, 1971. Trustee of Tate Gallery, 1965–72. Freedom of Borough of St Ives, 1968; Bard of Cornwall, 1968. Honorary fellow, St Anne’s College, Oxford, 1968; senior fellow, Royal College of Art, London, 1970; honorary member, American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1973. Commander (CBE), 1958, and Dame (DBE), 1965, Order of the British Empire. Died in a fire at studio in St Ives, 20 May 1975. Barbara Hepworth Museum opened in St Ives, 1976.
