The role of a true creative director is multifaceted. It involves an overall vision for a project that may include input on various levels of production design, lighting design, video content, music direction, wardrobe and/or costume design, and overall show flow. A creative director is the glue between all departments and the Artist and management team for implementing a holistic and unified direction for show creation.

Every project is different and requires various levels of research, inspiration, and balance. I think the role of a creative director is very instrumental in representing the brand of the Artist in the most creative light and communicating the wishes of the Artist to all the various design departments so the Artist feels well represented and can focus on their art and performance. The creative director can then focus on the details and nuances of making sure that the various designers have all the proper information, imagination, and direction to fulfill their own creative contribution to the overall project as great results are always a team effort.

When I started out in the Creative Director role myself, starting with Hilary Duff in 2008, I took Raj’s lessons to heart. He ended up being great inspiration for me, and I owe him a lot for setting me straight at the outset. A few years later, I was asked to be the Creative Director for Selena Gomez (Figure 5.2) (yes, I have a tendency for teenage girls from TV shows as clients). Selena was the tabloid craze at the time. She was 19 years old, had a hit TV show coming to a close, had a hit on the radio, a new album… oh, and she was dating Justin Bieber. It’s the little things. In our first meeting, I was struck by how farsighted and smart she was. This was no teenager. This was a young woman who had full awareness of her organization and her fan base. I still did the set and overall design for the show, but I needed to stick close to her and keep a step back so I didn’t lose the full picture. To accomplish this, I handed video off to my brilliant friend, Brent Sandrock, and the lighting off to her lighting director at the time, my old friend Brian Jenkins. This was important for several reasons. First, I trusted them to execute. Second, I knew they would bring their own ideas and merge them into my concepts. Third, they worked well in the village. We all collectively created a great show and a great entry for Selena into her first full production tour. Borrowing a page from Raj and the Idols Tour, I would give the team phrases and concepts for each number and let them interpret from there. I remember specifically a moment with Jenkins where I quickly described a song as her ‘U2 moment, it’s all about the audience and her soaking it in’. We tried and tried, but our age differences had created a little impasse.
