Note on Naming Conventions

You probably noticed we named our variables in different ways. We had an ‘x’ variable, a ‘greeting’ variable, and a ‘my_grocery_list’ variable. They are all equally variables. So what’s the deal with the names? In programming, there are certain parts of the code that we can name ourselves. Some of these are variables, functions, classes, and methods. However, while we’re mostly free to name them however we want, there are some strict rules and some recommendations that are followed by all programmers. Here’s a guideline:

Be descriptive : The most important thing a name should reflect is the purpose of the variable or function. In programming, names are used to tell the programmers what the variable is used for. This way they can quickly check the code when there’s a problem. Imagine taking a week or two break from your project and then looking at the code. You’ll probably forget what you planned to do, especially if you just name variables like “myVariable” or “variable1”. So if you build a list of weapons, name it something like “weapons_swords”. This way you’ll immediately know what the code section is about.
