The somber thoughts consumed her for the days that followed. Though she eventually felt better and completed her errands successfully, Janine’s ability to concentrate grew worse. She tried to stay focused at home, but she felt disconnected from everything more than ever before.

Most of the meals were either overcooked or undercooked. She ate little as she’d lost her appetite, but the boys mumbled and struggled to eat the food. Thad relented the second evening and brought out some berries with sugar so they would at least not go to bed hungry. She attempted an apology but was distracted halfway through when her husband asked how she was feeling.

“I’m… I’m fine, I’m just tired. Please, let me clean up. I’ll try not to burn it tomorrow.” She scooped up the plates and turned away before he could catch the tears. It was hard to look at him now because all she could think of was finding him with someone else. Time passed agonizingly slow, but it all felt like she was in a daze where she couldn’t focus.

Sunday returned and her mother joined them for church. The older woman lived close by and made sure to join them most Sundays. Behind them sat Caleb and his family as well, so all her loved ones were with her.

Janine had hoped that being in the house of God would be enough to calm her fears, but she couldn’t concentrate on the sermon or the songs when the service began. There was a wrinkle in her dress that she couldn’t smooth out, and there was something inside the back of her dress that was making her itch.

“Are you certain you’re all right?” Her mother leaned in and put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. “You haven’t joined in for even the chorus.”

Swallowing, she glanced about before offering a shrug to her. “Of course. I’m fine. Just not in the mood to sing.” It was more of an automatic response than anything else, Janine knew, but she wasn’t sure what else to say. Normally she could tell her mother everything. Now, she didn’t know and now was certainly not the time to pour her heart out.

The sermon continued, but she couldn’t pay attention with those vile words of gossip still ringing in her ears. It had been days, but she could think of nothing else. She managed a covert glance toward her husband. Her mouth grew dry and her heart pounded as she tried to look for a clue, anything that would provide her an explanation.

Thad Hewitt. Silver Dollar Inn. In and out at the same time with a Miss Triplett. A single woman.

After she had gone home that day, Janine had tried to convince herself that it was just a misunderstanding and that Thad would tell her what really happened. He would be honest and true as she’d always known him to be. But when nothing more came to pass, when he didn’t say anything, the beat of her heart continued in caution.
