Chapter 5

Things between Mia and Tara progressed quickly over the next few months. Mia accepted the job at the bar and she proved to be a hard worker. Outside of work she and Tara could not keep their hands off each other and ever since that first night, Mia shared Tara’s bed.

Tara’s Dad was recovering steadily from his stroke and the focus was on his rehab exercises so there were no talks of his mother returning to work anytime soon. Not that Tara expected any different, her parents were always together so she knew her Mom would not leave her Dads side to return to work.

It was just another day at the bar. Mark was busy making up the food orders while Tara was in the back dealing with some deliveries in between keeping an eye on drink orders from Suzi and Mia. There were more customers apart from the regulars even though it was still early since it was getting colder outside and people wanted a familiar place to warm up with something to eat and have a drink.

As Mia stood leaning against the bar waiting for Mark to complete her orders someone touched her shoulder. Spinning around with her notepad at the ready to take an order she was stunned to see her parents, Martin and Elaine Lambert standing before her.

“Mom?..Dad? What are you doing here?”

Mia was not sure what to expect since the last time she had seen her parents they had locked her out of the only home she had ever known and were threatening to call the cops for her.

“Hello Mia.” Her father said, his tone clipped. Mia would have flinched if she had been alone, but the soft buzz of people talking all around was comforting.

“Hello Mia.” Her mother said, her tone was much warmer but hesitant as if she too was unsure of what would happen.

“What…um…brings you here?” Mia asked, her voice shook a bit as she became nervous over the thought that they might make a scene. She loved her parents, that would never ever change, but all the feelings of fear and abandonment she had felt were returning.

“We saw one of your friends from school…” Martin began.

“Who?” Mia asked.

“Your friend Stephanie.” Her mom continued. “We ran into her at the mall and she mentioned that you two had recently spoken online and that you were down here working.”

“Ok, but why are you here?” Mia persisted. She was sorry now that she had responded to Stephanie’s messages but how was she to know that Mia’s parents had kicked her out? Mia had simply told Stephanie that she had wanted a change and had moved to Greenville.

Her parents exchanged a glance with each other before her Dad cleared his throat. “We’re happy to see you’ve gotten a job here, but your mother and I want you to come back home.”

Stunned, Mia stared at her parents. “You threw me out the house changed the locks and threatened to have me arrested.”

“Well…” Her dad began but Mia continued.
