The cafe was busy again and Leana immediately got to work trying to lighten the load for her mum and Elspeth. She could see why Isla avoided working in the cafe. Leana enjoyed chatting to the customers, but for someone who preferred her own company it wouldn’t be much fun. And compared to Isla’s art projects it must seem very stressful.

Things slowed down in the afternoon and Leana volunteered to pick Arran up from nursery. After dinner with her family, she spent the evening in the pub, chatting to some of the regulars.

She was sitting out on the patio the next morning when Lexie joined her with a mug of coffee in her hands.

“I thought you were on holiday,” Lexie said, standing and looking out over the loch. “Why are you up so early?”

“Making the most of it,” Leana said sadly.

“It doesn’t have to just be a holiday.” Lexie’s features were full of concern. “You can move back if you want.”

“I don’t think I can.” Leana fought off tears as she smiled up at Lexie. “I love Alasdair. I’d be miserable without him if I moved back here.”

“Get him to move here,” Lexie said, perching on the edge of the sunlounger.

Leana puffed out a humourless laugh. “I don’t think so.”

“Why not?”

“Because he’s always lived in Edinburgh. His life is there. And we’ve only been together three months. I can hardly ask him to uproot his life and move up here. It’ll seem like the edge of the world to him.”

“Everyone loves it here. Have you ever met a visitor who doesn’t want to move here?”

“Most people don’t do it, though.”

“Most people don’t have a reason to,” she argued.

Glancing away, Leana’s eyes followed a seagull which glided across the water and landed on the rocks by the shore. “I wish you wouldn’t put ideas in my head,” she said with a small smile.

“I’d be amazed if it was me that put it there,” Lexie said pointedly. “I have to get to work. I’ll see you this evening.”

“Have a good day,” Leana mumbled as her friend went back inside. Lexie was right; the thought of moving back to Skye had been niggling at her for a while. There was no way she could give up Alasdair, though, and she’d been fiercely avoiding imagining how life would be if he moved to Lannick with her. Whenever she let herself think about it, it seemed too perfect to ever be a reality. She couldn’t ask him to move, so there was no use in imagining it. Life in Edinburgh was great and she would be very happy there with Alasdair. That was what she kept telling herself, anyway.

Like the previous two days, Leana went over to help her mum and Elspeth at the cafe in the morning. Dark clouds rolled over around midday. Customers stopped arriving and the ones already there didn’t linger once they’d finished their sandwiches and snacks.

Elspeth and Leana had just cleared up the outside area when the heavens opened. They’d already sent Meghan home when things had quietened down.
