Meg and Joy got out of the taxi outside the Golden Lion.

“Are you sure you are all right.” Meg asked. “It looked pretty intense between you and Duncan.”

“I am and it was, but everything between us is fine. I have promised to talk to him tomorrow.”

“Will you tell him everything?” she paused, “Is that what you want?”

“I honestly don’t know. I’ll see how it goes when we start our chat.” She shrugged, “The way he was talking I thought he knew, so I did let it slip about what Dad tried to do, you know, to rape me. It just slipped out.”

“How did he react?” Meg asked.

Jocelyn stopped and said quietly, her smile spread into a grin, “I think he was gob smacked, but I think he believed me. The way he was talking about Dad, I think a lot more has gone on than I have been told. Did you know that Dad has a brain tumour?”

“Your Nan thought there was something wrong, but in the past few years there has been a lot of tension between your Nan and your Mum. I don’t think they discussed things like they used to do.”

“Don’t worry Meg. I’m going to be fine. I got through it all those years ago. I’ll get through this now.”

“Sure?” Meg asked.

“Sure.” Joy answered. “Come on. Let’s finish seeing Nan off in style.” Jocelyn put her arm through Meg’s and walked into the pub.

Joy noticed a man standing at the bar. As she looked at him, something tugged at her memory, something long forgotten then like grains of sand it slipped through her fingers.

She continued to look around the room at the various friends and relatives of her Nan and realised that she needed a new project to become fully immersed in. Hopefully it would help her to combat the grief of her Nan’s passing that habitually washed over her, and plunged her into a darkness she had no desire to revisit. She felt lucky that she didn’t have to deal with the patronising pats on the hand and the sometimes false sympathy of others. For, unlike Duncan, she appeared to be persona non grata.

She pushed the negative thoughts to the back of her mind. Today she was taking the first step in her new life. A small stirring of excitement and emotion came from deep within. Peacefulness and tranquillity washed over her. Joy immediately thought of her Nan. She again looked around the room and a quiet inner stillness invaded her being, as though someone had wrapped her in their comforting arms.
