“Sometimes things happen that, at the time, make no sense! Some of them are bad! There’s just no denying it!” The voice on the radio crackled with a distracting, almost irritating harshness. Tony didn’t mind, though. He enjoyed the old preacher’s straightforward, no-nonsense lectures. And no one else was on the bus where they could be bothered. He wouldn’t pick up his first passenger for several more minutes. The sermon would be over and the tiny radio mounted on the panel to his left with duct tape would be silenced before anyone could hear it and raise any complaints. “You end up asking yourself how in the world any good could come from them! But God can use anything for good – for His purposes!”

Shirley Waterhouse needed to be at the office in less than fifteen minutes. That feat alone would have been impressive enough given her late start. But she would never allow herself to be seen at a staff meeting or any other important function without perfect makeup. So she balanced her elbows on the steering wheel and studied the face in the rear view mirror while paying only cursory attention to the world passing by. The car seemed to know the way and practically drove itself down the bumpy side street.

“Sometimes all we can do is trust Him! We may never know…”

Shirley’s gray sedan wasn’t moving all that quickly. Neither was Tony’s bus. But stop signs are there for a reason, and bad things happen when they are ignored. The small makeup case balanced on Shirley’s leg slipped to the floor. She glanced down and instinctively lunged for it.

Tony was absorbing every word from the old preacher on the radio when the car darted out from his right. He had no time to react. He wouldn’t remember every split-second detail of the wreck, but he would still be able to provide adequate information to the police. Shirley would never remember anything about that morning.

The entire staff of Senator Pike’s Jackson, Mississippi office was in place – except for Ms. Waterhouse. They assumed that she would probably arrive exactly on time, maybe even with the senator himself. Rumors and speculation were filling the third floor with rumbles of conversation while several armed men clothed in black, including hoods, were filling the first floor. Fortunately for many people it was early – much too early for anyone to be working at the security checkpoint in the lobby or in any of the shops around its perimeter. The staff members on the third floor were not so fortunate.

“You guys did great!” General Hollister congratulated Joe as they watched the small jet race down the dusty runway and ease into the air.

“Thanks…” Joe nervously replied.

The plane shrunk westward into the Texas sky, turned south, and disappeared.

“Pike is on his way to a sleepy little resort tucked away in the mountains of Central America. He’ll be relaxing there for a while, courtesy of some folks he won’t recognize. We’ll join him there
