Chapter Eight
After a leisurely clean up and quick swim, they made their way slowly back to the ranch house. Rhys kept her close the entire ride back, his hand in hers, their fingers laced together. They talked about little things and nothing at all. It was just a chance to be together and enjoy each other’s company.
Of course, when they did return to the ranch house, his mother was waiting. Gwen couldn’t quite read the woman’s expression, though, and Rhys just snorted out a laugh under his breath. No help from that corner.
Sliding off his horse, he came around to help her down. “Don’t look her in the eye and she won’t be able to get you to tell her anything. But if you meet her gaze.” He shook his head slowly. Turning, he handed the horses off to one of the hands with a few instructions about each before he took her hand once more and they headed for his mom.
“Did you two have fun?” she asked, eyeing them both up.
“Absolutely,” Rhys told her. “The water was nice after that long trail ride.”
“Uh-huh.” Kristin Hollister didn’t look like she was buying it. “Go man the grill, Rhys. Gwen and I will be along in a moment.”

Not when the woman bloody well could always read her like a book.
“You can in a moment, dear. This won’t take long,” Kirstin said. “Rhys, grill, now!” she snapped out.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said. Letting Gwen go, he moved along, but did turn to shoot her an apologetic look, mouthing “I’m sorry” over his mother’s shoulder.
“Now, Gwen, dear,” Kirstin said, moving up to Gwen’s side. Hooking their arms, Kirstin tugged her away from the crowd at a lazy pace. “I try never to meddle in my children’s lives, not when they were young and idiotic little shits, and most definitely not now that they are adults. But I do wish to say something. Whether you listen or not is completely up to you as I don’t wish to meddle in your life either.”
“You know that I have always valued your opinions on things, Mrs. Hollister, but I have to say something now so that you hopefully don’t get the wrong idea.” She took a breath, looked toward where Rhys was, and then back to his mother. “No matter what you say, I won’t give him up. I don’t know what happened, but I feel as
