“He’s my partner,” Joe says without a pause.

“A business?”

“No, a boyfriend.”

Maddie stays overnight at the Steamboat Sheraton and is up before seven a.m. She eats a quick breakfast in the hotel’s grill and then heads for the hospital. When she enters Joe’s room, she sees that two doctors are talking to Joe, and she steps to the foot of the bed.

“Hi, Maddie,” Joe says.

“Hi yourself,” Maddie says. She looks at the doctors. “What’s the prognosis?”
