Chapter 14

Rory felt like all the oxygen had been sucked from the room as she stared up at Donner, desperately searching for a flicker of truth, something that would tell her he was lying. Spinning words into fairy tales seemed to be one of his many talents.

He didn’t flinch or look away, unabashedly allowing her to peruse her fill. Forcing her to own the awareness rippling between them like an energy current on high.

“It’s time for our conference call,” she told him and held up her hand to ward off the protest she assumed was coming. But she couldn’t do this. Not now. Maybe not ever.

She could not be attracted to her partner. It was not happening. This stupid undercover assignment was messing with her brain. Her heart.

Distractions would get someone killed, that was a given. She had to be better than this.

The real question was why he was working so hard to be a distraction. There was no way he meant what he said, not the way her insides wanted to interpret it. Sure, he’d thrown down some pretty words about how much she intrigued him, but that was probably because she didn’t fawn at his feet like a teenager at a Harry Styles concert. Not because it was true.

“We’ll play it your way, Detective,” he finally said as he banked some of the fire in his gaze. “But this is not over.”

Donner released her without taking a pound of her flesh with him, but how, she couldn’t fathom when it had felt like his hand had fused to her chin, as if he’d taken a blow torch to the area in question and turned up the heat.

Scrambling to recover from what had been at its core nothing more than a conversation about some text messages sent to them by a deranged killer, she whumped into her seat at the table and set up her laptop. But instead of sliding into his own seat on the opposite side of the table, where there would be a yard of wood between them, Donner dragged his chair over to her side and cozied right up to her elbow.

When she glanced at him with what should have amounted to an epic glare warning him from his current course of action, he just grinned. “No reason we can’t share, is there? We’re calling into the same conference. It would be all echoey and stuff if I log in on a computer that’s five feet away.”

Harrumphing, she shook her head but didn’t tell him to go away because that would be childish. Though she felt like being childish. Among other things.

Okay, what she really wanted was to go back in time and take Donner’s dare. The kissing one. Instead of sharing Washer’s texts. Now he had the equivalent of a dorsal fin on his back, and that look on his face very much resembled a shark who had scented blood.

Of course, if she’d kissed him, then he would have figured out how much she’d wanted to.
