Chapter Twenty-Two

Mitch woke early and worked on getting Dex out of jail. Before he’d passed out from exhaustion, he’d made a few moves to help their cause, but this morning he put the icing on the cake. It took him two hours, but the complaint against Dex was gone. Since there was no reason for him to be in jail, Mitch submitted an order for his release. It was still early, and he wasn’t sure if they would let Dex go, but he hoped they would.

He sent a text to Dex's phone, asking him to call when he was free. Mitch headed to the coffee shop and bought a cup of black coffee as he waited. He prayed his plan worked. If it didn't, then he would change tactics. After about forty minutes and about three minutes before he was ready to give up and try a different approach, his phone rang. He couldn't help the smile on his face as he answered.

“Hello.”

“I’m shocked.”

“Me too. I can’t believe it worked. We need to get out of here. I’m at a coffee shop close to where you are.”

“Tell me where.”

He rattled off the address and hung up. Five minutes later, he saw Dex and got up, meeting him by the door. Dex reached out and took his hand.

“Grab a coffee and some food. We're headed out to meet some people.”

“Thank you.” Dex's lips stretched wide, and his eyes were bright.

“You’re welcome. I’m headed to the restroom. I’ll meet you in just a few.”

Dex was second in line when the restroom door opened, revealing a mom with two toddlers. Mitch stared at the woman and her children, wondering if his life of service had been worth it. Now wasn't the time to be thinking about a family. He was in danger and putting kids through something like he was going through wasn't fair. Plus, kids would slow him down.

When he came out of the bathroom, Dex had his coffee in hand and was chewing on a muffin.

“You ready?”

Dex held up one finger. “Just waiting for a sandwich.”

He nodded and checked his email. There was a note detailing where they were to go. They had to get south to a small airport outside Richmond, Virginia. They were about an hour away, and he really didn't want to steal a car. They had six hours to make the trip. The train and public transportation was the only way to go.

Once they were out of the restaurant, he pulled a cap out of his bag and handed it to Dex. “Put this on.”

Dex took the cap and placed it on his head, pulling it low. Then he shrugged on the big sweatshirt Mitch gave him.

“Do I look different enough?”

“Not even close, but I don’t have time to fix any facial adjustments. Honestly, I don’t have supplies for your skin tone.”

Dex shook his head slowly. “Well, that's just bullshit.” He laughed and shrugged. “We'll figure it out. I've never done any facial prosthetics. I'd like to learn, though.
