Chapter 1: The Commercial

Kyle Bateman sat with his brother, Devin, and their parents in the living room. The warm glow of the TV filled the room as they watched reruns of an old, popular sitcom. It was a familiar scene for the Bateman family, quiet and predictable, just like their father. Kyle’s dad, Mark Bateman, was an unassuming man—tall, lanky, with a chili bowl haircut and glasses. He worked as a technical support and analyst engineer for a local computer company, and though he wasn’t one to stand out in a crowd, he was a reliable figure in Kyle’s life.

Kyle’s mom, Susan, was the heart of the household, always bustling with activity. She was a homemaker, constantly involved in school events, baking cookies for the teachers, and leading the PTA. She had a knack for organizing town events, and it wasn’t uncommon for people in Laurelsville to turn to her for help.

Devin, Kyle’s younger brother, was quiet but always full of curiosity. The two brothers often found themselves caught up in mischief with their friends, a ragtag group of kids known for getting into trouble. Among them were Billy Platts, a bold kid with a knack for solving mysteries, and Pumpkin, Billy’s loyal sidekick. Just a few weeks ago, Billy and Pumpkin had made the front page of the local paper for foiling a crime at Old Oak Inn. Billy had been particularly proud of that.

As they sat watching the TV, a commercial suddenly interrupted the show. Bright, flashy colors filled the screen, accompanied by a catchy jingle that seemed to burn itself into Kyle’s mind:

"Isn't it time to feel the proof?

Isn't it time for a Monster Juice?

Twist the cap and taste the brew,

Let the monster inside of you—

Monster Juice!"

The ad was strange, with swirling, neon colors and cartoonish monsters twisting their faces into grins as they popped open bottles of the new beer. Kyle's dad’s interest piqued, his eyes glued to the screen.

“That looks interesting,” Mark mumbled, adjusting his glasses.

Kyle noticed the way his dad’s attention lingered on the commercial. He usually wasn’t one for beer, maybe the occasional drink during football games, but nothing like this.

Later, after the show ended, Kyle and Devin jumped on their bikes, heading over to Billy’s house. The town had been abuzz lately with the renovation of an old warehouse on the outskirts of Laurelsville. For the past three months, construction crews had been working tirelessly, and rumors had been swirling about what the building would be. Word around town was that it was going to be a new brewery, but no one had confirmed it yet. The town could use something like that—a new business meant jobs, and Laurelsville needed them.

“Bet it’s that Monster Juice place,” Devin said, his voice full of excitement as they pedaled down the road. “Everyone's talking about it.”

“Yeah, maybe,” Kyle replied, his mind still on the strange commercial.

The next evening, something unexpected happened. Kyle’s dad walked through the door just after 5:00 p.m., carrying a six-pack of Monster Juice in his hand.
