Fast forward a decade to 2008. Fifteen years had now passed since Rayna Rison’s murder, and the police held out very little hope that her killer would ever be caught. Then, in March 2008, there was another twist. An inmate named Ricky Hammons, jailed on a murder charge, contacted the police and said that he had information relating to the Rison case. According to him, he knew who’d killed Rayna. It was her former boyfriend, Jason Tibbs.

The story that Hammons had to tell seemed incredibly farfetched, like something out of a bad Hollywood movie. He said that Tibbs had been dating his sister at the time and had borrowed her car on the night of the murder. At some point during the evening, the 14-year-old Hammons had gone down to the barn to smoke a joint. He was lurking in the shadows when he heard a car approaching. Concealing himself in the upper loft, he saw his sister’s car pull into the barn. Tibbs and another man, Eric Freeman, got out of the vehicle. From his place in the loft, Hammons saw Tibbs pop the trunk, open the lid, and rummage around inside. As he did so, the blankets were moved aside and Hammons saw a face. He hadn’t realized that it was Rayna until he saw her story on the news. Even then, he’d decided not to come forward since doing so would get him in trouble for smoking marijuana.
