"You tampered with my food, didn't you?"

Perry's voice shook me from my thoughts. Tied back to back around a concrete pillar, my adversary and I were both clueless as to our location—our shirts had been torn from our chests and tied to cover our eyes by Kek and his men just before we were thrown into the bed of a pickup truck and hauled here. The smell of gasoline, the hum of fluorescent lights overhead, and the echoing effect of our voices suggested we were being held in a cavernous garage of some sort.

"Why do you say that?"

"You know why. That was childish."

"I'm not saying I know what you're talking about, but if I did, I would argue that it's better to have a juvenile sense of humor than to be a compulsive liar and a thief," I said.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"I really shouldn't have to explain it to you, Perry." From the depths of the building, the eerie, scraping sound of a heavy steel door being shoved open reverberated off the concrete walls. "Sounds like our friend is back."

"How about you let me do the talking this time, Cogar? You always find a way to make them even more pissed off whenever you open your mouth."

"This coming from the guy who almost got both of us killed back in the Sudan because he couldn't keep his trap shut? No, I'll take my chances."

"Christ, Cogar. When are you going to let that go, huh? It was ten years ago. Grow up."

"It was seven years ago, Perry. And no, I won't let it go. You didn't think you burned a few bridges by stealing that article from me?"

"I didn't steal it from you."

"What would you call it? Borrowing without intent to return it? At best it was barefaced plagiarism."

"I didn't borrow it or plagiarize it, either. You and I were working together on the assignment. You did some of the research that helped me to write my article, and it turned out to be good enough for a Livingston Award. You're just mad that your work wasn't considered—and I get that—but you need to make your peace with it. That angst is going to eat you up inside."

I bit my lip and breathed out slowly. "I didn't know you won a Livingston Award."

Perry's voice softened. "Yeah, that's why the Times hired me."

"I see. Congratulations, that's quite the accomplishment."

"Thanks, Cogar. That means a lot coming from you."

"You fucking piece of lying horse shit, you don't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the Livingston Award. You ripped me off, you ignominious hack. And you dare to relegate me to your fucking research assistant? I completely wrote that article without an ounce of help from you. And what's worse, you were too lazy to even change the language—you literally took the paper out of my hands, my unconscious fucking hands, and walked it right into Kailas's office pretending like it was all your own doing. If there's any justice in this world, that crazy Syrian guy is going to sodomize you into a coma.
