Alexandra had pushed a policeman away from his motorcycle, borrowed his ride, and followed the ambulance through traffic. She replied, “Maybe a real ambulance in case this doesn’t go well.”

“What’s going on?”

Voltaic explained as Alexandra focused on the road.

Danica replied, “Then there’s not much I can do. Get him, Alex.”

“You know it.”

The ambulance couldn’t reach full speed in the thick traffic, although it had sirens. She was lucky the bad guys hadn’t considered magical transport for themselves. As she swerved across three lanes to avoid a cab that had braked for no reason, she wondered why they hadn’t killed him and run since they’d taken a shot at him. It seemed impossible that it could have been two unrelated attacks simultaneously in the same place.

None of that mattered at the moment. She needed to get the ambulance stopped, fast. Only one way to accomplish it without risking injury to Damien came to mind.

She pulled the motorcycle over to the driver’s side and acted like she was about to surge forward. When the ambulance veered to smash into her, she pulled back and whipped around the opposite side. She fired her pistol at an angle into the passenger’s window twice to break the glass.

As the ambulance veered right to slam into her, she jumped off the bike and onto the door. She snaked one arm inside and grabbed the handle, and the door swung free. Alexandra rode the momentum, spun, and got her foot on the running board when it stopped.

The person behind the wheel had a pistol, but she jumped inside and grabbed his hand as he brought it up. Her legs were still outside the vehicle as she tussled with him, and she yanked them in just in time to avoid a car.

The ambulance slewed from side to side as the driver fought for control, and she slammed the bottom of her fist down on the man’s wrist. It snapped, and the gun fell free. She pulled herself up, slammed her foot down on the brake, and punched him in the face with one hand while she used the other to control the ambulance. Several more punches rendered him unable to fight her, and the ambulance stopped.

Police cars pulled up as she rushed into the back to check on Damien. He’d been strapped in and was in good shape. The medic who’d been with him hadn’t been and was unconscious on the floor of the ambulance. She announced, “I have him. He’s safe.”

Danica replied, “Good work, partner. Jilly says so too.”

Alexandra laughed and let out a long sigh as the adrenaline left her. “Thanks. I think I need a drink.”

Danica laughed. “Sounds right to me. Drinks for everyone. We’ll call that a new company ritual.”
